Today was a Remembrance Sunday like no other. The civic service of remembrance was filmed weeks ago and is available to view here.

This morning I went along to the Ilford War Memorial to lay my wreath on behalf of Ilford North residents and found that members of the Royal British Legion, the uniformed services, Cllr Ruth Clark and Jas Athwal – Leader of Redbridge Council – had done the same, as had a few local residents. It was a poignant moment and we observed two minutes of silence at 11am.

Today we honour all of those whose service and sacrifice paved the way for the freedom and democracy we enjoy. It is fragile, precious and paid for by those who gave their lives. We should never take this for granted.

When you go home

Tell them of us and say

For your tomorrow

We gave our today

We will remember them, always.
