Tonight I attended the Little Heath School awards, hosted at the Jack Carter Pavilion in Barkingide. My heart is bursting with pride at the achievements of the young people we saw collecting their awards tonight. They’ve overcome some extraordinary hurdles to get to where they are today and their success was celebrated in style tonight.

I was particularly proud to present an outstanding achievement award to Ryan Lamb – or Ryan Lamb MP as he is known at the school. I first met Ryan in Parliament where he was delivering a speech about barriers to employment for disabled young people, particularly around learning disabilities. I was blown away by his confidence then and, as this video shows, his confidence has only grown since. He has a huge interest in history and politics and even achieved a GCSE in history. I also think he knows more about the House of Commons than I do! He’s certainly got ambitions to join me on the green benches.

This evening was about the young people and their success, but I also want to highlight the dedication and love for these young people shown by their teachers, teaching assistants, parents and carers. Whenever I visit Little Heath (and I haven’t been for a while so will be popping in soon) you can feel the warmth, the joy and dedicated teaching and learning taking place.

In the topsy turvy world of politics and the increasingly uncertain times we live in, nights like tonight are a reminder of the good that surrounds us. Making sure that every young person gets the best start in life is my overriding passion. It was a joy to see that in action tonight.

I’ll leave you with Ryan…
