As Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing on Redbridge Council, Wes has been championing the Alzheimer's Society 'Dementia Friends' initiative and today went along to their café in Barkingside to talk about dementia care and support.
The café is run by the Alzheimer's Society and the NHS North East London Foundation Trust. It provides a welcoming environment where people with dementia and their family and friends can come along, meet, network, enjoy each other's company and hear from speakers on a range of topics.
Wes says: "I really enjoyed my visit to the Dementia Café in Barkingside. I've picked up a number of issues this afternoon: from people struggling to find out what support they're entitled to access to the quality of service they receive from the local Incontinence Service. I'll be picking these up with local service providers in my capacity as Chair of Redbridge's Health and Wellbeing Board.
"I've already arranged for the Health and Wellbeing Board to receive Dementia Friends training from the Alzheimer's Society and will be arranging training for councillors and Council staff. We can all take simple steps to create a society in which people with dementia are supported and treated with the dignity they deserve.
"Huge thanks to everyone who made the visit a success, especially our local Dementia Friends Champion, Becky [pictured]"
