Who I am

I’m really proud to have been elected as the Member of Parliament for Ilford North. I’ve lived in Redbridge for over a decade - currently in Barkingside - and care passionately about our community. I'm always out and out meeting as many residents, community groups, charities and businesses as possible to listen to your concerns and priorities.

Prior to my election I served as Deputy Leader of Redbridge Council and I'm proud to still serve as a Labour councillor for Aldborough Ward (where I live), which I do on an unpaid basis.

I'm not your typical politician. I come from a working class family in Tower Hamlets. I funded myself through college and university with retail jobs and I've spent the past ten years working outside politics in the voluntary sector in roles focused on helping young people to realise their potential and succeed in education and work.

I'll speak my mind and stand up for Ilford North. You won't always agree with me (you should never trust politicians who only ever tell you what you want to hear!), but you'll always know where I stand.

I know that there’s lots of cynicism about politics and politicians and I understand why. I hope that during my term in office, I repay the faith that people have placed in me and earn the trust and respect of those who didn't.

A SHORT BIOG:

Wes Streeting is the Labour MP for Ilford North, having been elected at the 2015 General Election. He also represents Aldborough Ward on Redbridge Council (unpaid), where he served as Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing until his election as a Member of Parliament.

Wes lives in Barkingside and has lived in Redbridge for over a decade. He’s served as a primary school governor, a board member of Redbridge Sport and Leisure in Barkingside, a trustee of Redbridge Citizens Advice Bureau in Ilford and is a regular at community groups and events across the constituency.

In his professional life, he has worked outside politics as a senior manager and chief executive for a number of voluntary and private sector organisations working to improve access to education: from an anti-bullying campaign working with over 10,000 schools across Britain to running a national charity that supports people from under-privileged backgrounds to get to university.

Wes’ passion for education arises from his own experience, growing up on a council estate in Tower Hamlets to become the first person in his family to go to university. He is one of the few pupils who received free school meals to make it to Cambridge University (just one per cent). Wes is a former President of the National Union of Students. Now in his thirties, Wes wants to use his experience to make a real difference for Ilford North.
