Today I had the enormous privilege of attending the Coronation of Their Majesties the King and Queen as one of the representatives of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

For a boy from Stepney it was quite something to be there and I enjoyed talking to people who had been chosen to attend because of their service to their local community, public service, or other good causes.

I genuinely think that our country does pomp and pageantry better than anywhere else in the world. Crowds turned out to celebrate along the Mall and didn’t let the weather spoil their day. I know many people are celebrating across our Borough this weekend too.

Our Armed Forces did us proud with a spectacular display and countless thousands of people have been involved in putting together an event that was watched by millions worldwide and will go down in history.

Of course our constitutional monarchy isn’t everybody’s cup of tea. I respect that. But for millions of others it has been a special day.
⁣
I hope the reign of King Charles will be one that sees real change for the better for our country. Goodness knows we need it.
