I wrote in the Ilford Recorder this week about Liz Truss’ legacy, the state of the Conservative Party, and how we in Labour plan to fix their mess. You can find the article below:

Liz Truss has gone but the Conservative clown show continues. The real story isn’t the Conservative Party’s psychodrama, it’s the consequences of their chaos. They have crashed the economy and working people are paying for it.

Mortgage payments are going through the roof, bills are rising, and wages aren’t keeping pace.

The cavalry is coming with Labour. At our conference in Liverpool last month we set out a serious plan for Britain’s economy, a serious plan to tackle the cost of living, and a serious plan to tackle the biggest crisis in the NHS’s history. We offer the country a strong leader, with a united team, and a fresh start for Britain.

Don’t just take my word for it. The chairman of Tesco said that the Conservatives have no growth plan and Labour is the “only team on the field”.

Let me give you a couple of examples. Our plan to insulate 19 million homes and invest in renewable energy and new nuclear will bring down bills, create new jobs, secure Britain’s energy supply from global shocks and dodgy despots, and help us get to net zero. We’re offering immediate help with bills alongside a long-term plan for our energy security. That’s the kind of strategic thinking we need.

My plan to deliver the biggest expansion of the NHS workforce in history will double the number of medical places at university, create 10,000 additional clinical training places for nurses and midwives, double the number of district nurses qualifying and increase the number of health visitors by 5,000 – fully costed and funded by abolishing the non-dom tax status. A serious plan for the NHS to tackle the Conservative backlogs and mismanagement that have delivered record waiting lists, longer ambulance waits and unsafe care.

The risk now isn’t change with Labour, it’s more of the same with the Conservatives.

Expecting the Tories to fix this mess is like asking the arsonist to put out the fire they started. It’s not going to happen.

Only Labour can offer the fresh start that Britain needs. A general election can’t come soon enough.
