I know that lots of people are having a really hard time at the moment because of the impact of covid-19 on livelihoods. This is affecting a lot of people locally and I’ve been doing my best to help people who’ve been in touch about their own situations. Today I challenged Ministers as to why people on Universal Credit are facing losing a £20 a week from April.

Locally, this could affect 10,000 people just in my constituency.

Nationally, this cut will impact 6.2 million families, including those on working tax credits. Joseph Rowntree Foundation report that this cut would push 300,000 children into poverty.

DWP Ministers know how much of a difference £20 a week makes. It’s the Chancellor who needs convincing.

I’ll keep fighting to make sure that people get the support they need through tough times. We can’t allow families, especially those with children, to struggle through no fault of their own when we’re in the middle of the worst recession in 300 years, with rocketing unemployment.
