I’m absolutely delighted that The Labour Party Leader Keir Starmer has asked me to serve as Labour’s Shadow Minister for Schools. Education is my number one passion. It changed my life. Having grown up on a council estate and experiencing child poverty in the 1980s, I wouldn’t be where I am today without a great state education.

This morning I did my first interview with Sky News on the urgent need to act on childhood hunger. So many children face going hungry this Christmas unless the Government acts. As someone who grew up on free school meals I know how important this is.

There is simply no excuse for children going hungry in this country in this century. It’s time for Boris Johnson to do the right thing. It shouldn’t need Marcus Rashford to tell him that allowing children to go hungry isn’t acceptable.

You can watch me speaking on this issue on Sky News here.
