Wes and others Involved in defending the Green Belt
Wes and others Involved in defending the Green Belt

Over the past four years I’ve been active in defending our Green Belt and making the positive case for it: from opposing building on Oakfield to representing the Mayor of London at Green Belt debates.

This morning I met campaigners from a range of residents’ associations and groups, including The Aldborough Hatch Defence Association, Barkingside 21, Fairlop Heritage Group, Seven Kings & Newbury Park Residents’ Association and local farmers.

It’s quite clear that, whatever the potential merits of the failed bid to bring the three markets to Redbridge, residents’ opposition to it was based on genuine and persuasive arguments about the need to protect our Green Belt for current and future generations.

So today I’ve signed a clear and unequivocal pledge: “I promise to defend the Redbridge Green Belt for current and future generations and to oppose any plans to build on it.” I don’t make this promise lightly and I will honour it at every opportunity.

We’ve decided together that we want the Council to develop a strategy for Fairlop Plain with community involvement – looking at how we can make the area even better in terms of leisure, nature conservation and biodiversity. We’re looking forward to a positive discussion about this and I’ll keep you all posted.

Thanks to Ann Wilderspin for hosting us all at Willow Farm this morning and to everyone who came along on a chilly Friday morning!
