Why I voted against air strikes in Syria

I've had hundreds of letters and e-mails about the situation in Syria and the government's request that Parliament should authorise air strikes in Syria.

This is, without doubt, the most difficult decision I've had to make since becoming an MP. It was a finely balanced decision, but in the end I voted to oppose military action in Syria.

I wrote a piece for the Guardian, based on my letter to Ilford North residents and my local Labour Party, explaining my decision.

Whatever my misgivings about Parliament's decision, I pray that our armed forces return safely and that their mission is a success.
