New Year, New Fare Rises

Labour campaigners were out in force today as the latest Tory fares rises came into effect for commuters starting a new week at work.

Fares under Tory Mayor Boris Johnson have risen year on year. The cost of a travelcard has risen by an average of 3.1%, bringing the cost of a monthly zone 1-4 travel card up to a whopping £172.80.

Wes Streeting, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Ilford North said: “Once again commuters are being hit with an inflation-busting fares rise, even though the cost for getting to and from work is already one of the biggest expenses after housing for people who work in central London. I don’t think the Mayor of London or government ministers really understand how much people are already struggling to meet rising costs of living.

“It seems ridiculous that people should be paying £172.80 just to get to and from work. The Mayor needs to take action to bring fares under control.”
