Wes Streeting, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Ilford North, spoke at the annual general meeting of Redbridge Young Labour tonight about the importance of young people being involved in political debate.
He said: “Under the Tories and Lib Dems, young people are being let down badly. MPs like Lee Scott, who broke their promise to vote against higher tuition fees, have trebled tuition fees, axed the Education Maintenance Allowance and cut funding for careers advice and support. With over a million young people unemployed this isn’t good enough. As Ilford North’s MP, I will be a champion for young people and their opportunities.”
The meeting also elected a new team for 2014. Baljit Panesar was elected Chair of Redbridge Young Labour, while Ilford North Labour members Khayer Chowdhury and Ifthi Hoque were elected to the committee. Ilford North currently has two members – John Howard and Jay Asher – elected to the committee of London Young Labour. A number of Young Labour members are standing as candidates in this year’s Council elections
Wes said: “It’s great to see so many young members of Ilford North playing such an active role across our borough and capital city. I’m particularly proud to see a number of younger members standing for Redbridge Council. If we’re to run the Council well, we need councillors that represent the diversity of the community – including younger members.”
