Over 1,500 Children Waiting for Swimming Lessons at Fullwell Cross

Wes Streeting, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for Ilford North, has warned that the Tories' plans for a temporary swimming pool in central Ilford will not address the huge waiting list for swimming lessons at Fullwell Cross.

It has emerged that Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure, the Council’s leisure trust, closed the waiting list for swimming lessons at Fullwell Cross two months ago because the leisure centre is unable to cope with the demand from the public.

Figures obtained from Vision by Wes Streeting reveal that there are currently 1,577 children and 249 adults on the waiting list at Fullwell Cross. Correspondence also confirms the decision to close the list to any new applications, which means that demand for lessons is likely to be even higher.

Wes Streeting said: “It is shocking that there are already 1,500 children waiting for swimming lessons at Fullwell Cross leisure centre so I’m not surprised the list has closed. The Leader of the Council should be ashamed of his administration’s failure to provide the swimming facilities the Conservatives promised.

“A temporary pool in south Ilford will not address this crisis. We need a permanent pool for residents in Ilford to free up capacity at Fullwell Cross for residents living in Ilford North. That’s what Labour will deliver.”
